date: 22/01/2025
On 16 January, Stéphane Séjourné, Executive Vice-President for Prosperity and Industrial Strategy, made his first official visit focused on the European automotive sector in Stuttgart, a city renowned for its role at the heart of the industry. With 13 million jobs and 7% of the EU’s GDP at stake, this visit underscored the Commission’s determination to address the challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
During the visit, EVP Séjourné emphasized the critical need to support the automotive industry as it transitions to sustainable and innovative technologies. He presented three core priorities for securing the sector’s future:
-
Strengthening competitiveness in the short term:
The Clean Industrial Deal will provide the tools and support needed for European companies to thrive amidst global competition and the green transition. -
Stimulating demand for clean, made-in-Europe vehicles:
Encouraging consumer adoption of clean technologies produced in Europe is vital for driving growth and accelerating the transition to sustainable mobility. -
Ensuring fair competition:
Protecting the industry from unfair external practices will help safeguard European manufacturers and the millions of jobs they support.
Séjourné highlighted the importance of collaboration between policymakers, industry leaders, and citizens in achieving these goals. “The automotive sector is more than just an economic pillar; it represents Europe’s innovation and resilience. Together, we can secure its future while advancing our climate and industrial ambitions,” he stated.
This visit also marked the launch of a strategic dialogue with key stakeholders in the automotive sector, as announced by President Ursula von der Leyen. This initiative aims to foster collaboration, address immediate challenges, and ensure Europe remains a leader in sustainable and competitive automotive innovation.
With decisive action and strong partnerships, the European Commission is committed to building a greener, more resilient, and globally competitive automotive industry.
